The 3 āSā Which You Should Know Before Your English Proficiency Exams

Greetings! I'm Mr. Sanjog Rayate, and I received an overall band 8 on the IELTS exam. As a result of my experiences, I have become an IELTS trainer. In my experience as both a student and an ESL (English as a Second Language) trainer, I've learned three crucial aspects - Skills, Scoring, and Significance, or the 'Three S'es - in gaining language fluency and acing tests. This understanding not only changed my method, but also shaped my teaching philosophy. In this post, I'll discuss these 'Three S'es, giving insights and practical recommendations that may be extremely useful for students looking to achieve in language examinations and beyond.
1. Skills
Every English proficiency tests like IELTS, TOEFL, PTE as well as the DET (Duolingo English Test) fundamentally requires four communicative skills which are Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening.
2. Scoring
A. Understand how the exams are scored:
There is a unique scoring system for every English language proficiency exam. While the TOEFL utilizes a 0-120 range, the DET (Duolingo English Test) uses a 10-160 scale, IELTS uses a 0–9 scale, and PTE offers a 10-90 scale. All language proficiency test scores are aligned to the Common European Framework (CEFR).
B. Work on ways to improve your score
PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! Here’s how you can do it:
- Listen to several podcasts and videos online to become acquainted with the native speaker's accent.
- Make reading a habit; newspapers are a good place to start.
- Practice reading aloud.
- Pick some idiomatic expressions from films and TV shows.
- Try reciting the dialogues from the shows and films loudly.
- Understand the framework and questions before proceeding to the writing exercises.
- Refer to the sample answers on official websites and in official manuals.
- For speaking, communicate with the others in English while adhering to the prompts.Give enough full-length mock examinations so that your mind and body is conditioned to it for the entire exam. This can prevent physical fatigue and test jitters during the final exam.
3. Significance
The English language is used around the world. When studying abroad, language proficiency is essential since it enables students to interact with locals straight from the shoulder, gain a deeper understanding of a foreign culture, and handle social and academic challenges with ease. Therefore, one can effectively communicate with people if they are a competent user of the language.
Overall, a language proficiency test score is a document proving to universities and immigration authorities that you have the language skills required for academic and professional success. There’s a reason why reputed universities and workplaces don’t just look at academics.
