The USA Visa Process (Student F1 Visa)
Embarking on a journey to study abroad in the USA is an exciting endeavor for many students worldwide. Let's delve into the step-by-step procedure to obtain the student F1 Visa, shedding light on essential aspects and tips for a smoother experience.
Obtaining the I-20 Form:
The initial step for the USA Visa process is obtaining an I-20 for a particular university. As and when a student receives admission from a particular University, they can get their I-20 by showing their finance i.e. Bank Balance Certificate which consists of the required & sufficient amount in their savings account.
Initiating the Visa Application:
As soon as the student receives his I-20, the Visa Application can be started. Student F1 visa Application also known as ‘DS-160 Form' is filled from a Particular website ‘UStraveldocs'.
Scheduling Appointments:
DS-160 form is interlinked with a portal known as ‘usvisascheduling.com' where one can schedule an OFC & Consulate appointment. To obtain a student F1 Visa, a student has to Schedule 2 appointments i.e. ‘OFC' & ‘Consulate'. All the Students have to attend both appointments. The OFC & Consulate appointments are compulsorily on different dates and both appointments have to be scheduled simultaneously. We can find visa embassies in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai & Hyderabad all over India.
USA Visa Interview:
At OFC, the student just needs to scan fingerprints & face & verification of documents have to be done. The actual interview happens at the consulate, when the visa officer & student have a question-and-answer session face to face.
Real-Time Decision Making:
After both appointments are done, if the Visa is approved, the visa officer collects the student's passport, and unfortunately, if the student gets his visa rejected, the visa officer will provide a white slip. The best part of the USA Visa procedure is that the student gets to know the Visa decision on the spot, after a Q&A session & under the same roof. This real-time decision helps students in taking further steps immediately. For Example, if a student gets his visa rejected, he can start re-applying the next day or can think of any backup option, immediately. This can save time and help to meet deadlines.
Strategic Planning:
Generally, for the fall intake (August), It's advisable to schedule the appointments in May, June or July and students can schedule their appointments in August or September if a program starts late. For spring intake (January) the appointments can be scheduled in November and December and can be scheduled in January in rare cases. For positive results, one must aim to get their visa appointment done by June (fall intake) and December (spring intake).
Overcoming Challenges:
Navigating through the USA visa process, the most time-consuming steps are:
- Obtaining I-20 from university
